I’m on a HitClips bender this morning. Just found out they charged $3.99 per clip!
Let me clarify: People were paying $3.99 for a “ultra low-fi,” abridged (1 minute) chunk of a pop song that could be heard within ten minutes of turning on an FM radio.
The players came in a bunch of varieties. Dancing robots, pens, alarm clocks, and video players that would interact with the music. The device above is the Yahoo! Hitclips Downloader, which let people download clips directly from the internet.
No wonder the record industry is having such a tough time coping with piracy. If you’d convinced the world to buy 20m HitClips in 2002, would you have seen the writing on the wall?
